Benin and Niger deepen strategic partnership to boost peace and development
The leaders of Benin and Niger have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, with a focus on security cooperation and economic growth. A landmark visit to Niger’s capital marked a new chapter in their partnership.
The President of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, concluded a landmark official visit to Niamey, Niger, on June 2, 2026. His arrival at Diori Hamani International Airport was greeted with full military honors by his Nigerien counterpart, General Abdourahamane Tiani, in a display of warm hospitality and mutual respect. This gesture underscored the strengthening of ties between the two nations.
Following the ceremonial welcome, the heads of state engaged in a private meeting at the Presidential Palace in Niamey. This was followed by an extended working session with delegations from both countries, focusing on shared priorities and regional challenges that impact both Benin and Niger.
A joint communiqué issued at the end of the visit highlighted the deep historical bonds of friendship and cooperation uniting Benin and Niger. The two presidents expressed their shared determination to elevate bilateral relations to new heights, with a focus on ensuring peace, security, and sustainable development for their citizens.
Security and stability take center stage
As the Sahel region continues to face persistent security threats, the leaders placed strong emphasis on counterterrorism and cross-border crime. They pledged to enhance joint efforts to combat these challenges, safeguard regional stability, and accelerate development initiatives across West Africa.
To further solidify their partnership, the presidents agreed to expand collaboration across political, economic, scientific, and cultural spheres. A key decision was the planned reopening of the Benin-Niger border, which has been restricted in recent years. A dedicated expert committee has been tasked with identifying and addressing existing barriers, with a mandate to deliver solutions within fifteen days.
During the visit, General Tiani conveyed his appreciation to President Wadagni for the official visit, while President Wadagni praised the exceptional hospitality extended during his stay. In a gesture of reciprocity, President Wadagni extended an official invitation to General Tiani to visit Benin. The invitation was warmly accepted, and diplomatic channels will finalize the details of the return visit, signaling both nations’ commitment to deepening their strategic alliance.
