Belgium’s dramatic comeback secures round of 16 spot against Senegal

La Belgique a décroché son ticket pour les 8e de finale du Mondial.
Belgium secured their ticket to the World Cup Round of 16.

In a truly last-gasp effort, Belgium clinched their qualification for the World Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, July 1st, overcoming Senegal with a dramatic 3-2 victory. The decisive goal came from a penalty converted deep into extra time, sealing a remarkable turnaround.

The match saw Senegal establish a commanding two-goal lead, with Habib Diarra scoring in the 24th minute and Ismaïla Sarr adding another in the 51st, maintaining their advantage until the 85th minute. However, the Red Devils showcased incredible resilience in the final stages of regular play. Successive strikes from Romelu Lukaku in the 86th minute and Youri Tielemans in the 89th sensationally leveled the score, forcing the game into extra time.

The encounter had been anticipated with uncertainty, as both teams had displayed mixed form in the tournament so far, each recording two draws and one victory.

Senegal began with formidable intensity, frequently unsettling the Belgian defense. The towering Thibaut Courtois, goalkeeper for the Red Devils and Real Madrid, could only get a touch on a cross from Ismail Jakobs, set up by Sadio Mané, before Ismaïla Sarr’s subsequent shot struck the post in the 13th minute. Habib Diarra, just 22 years old, finally broke the deadlock in the 24th minute. Following another relentless run and cross from Mané on the left flank, Sarr’s header once again hit the woodwork, but Diarra was quickest to react, slotting home the rebound.

Belgians stage an incredible comeback

At halftime, the French coach for Belgium, Rudi Garcia, made significant tactical adjustments, withdrawing Charles De Ketelaere, Kevin De Bruyne, and Jérémy Doku, and introducing Romelu Lukaku. Despite these changes, Senegal extended their lead shortly after the restart with another goal from Ismaïla Sarr.

A mid-second-half cooling break proved timely, as tensions flared between Belgian captain Youri Tielemans and teammate Leandro Trossard. Yet, this internal friction seemed to ignite a collective defiance. Ismail Jakobs first sent a long-range shot narrowly past Diaw’s top corner in the 77th minute. Then, Romelu Lukaku finally found the back of the net in the 86th minute. As Belgium’s all-time leading World Cup scorer with six goals, Lukaku’s strike reignited hope for the entire squad. Just three minutes later, Tielemans headed in an equalizer in the 89th minute, bringing Belgium back from the brink.

The initial phases of extra time were subdued, but the final minutes erupted with intensity. Dodi Lukébakio saw his shot deflected off the crossbar in the 117th minute. However, a penalty awarded after a VAR review for an irregular tackle allowed captain Tielemans to convert from the spot, finally delivering the Belgians their victory.

“In football, anything is always possible as long as you believe. The strength of this group also comes from those who come off the bench, because you can’t achieve results with just eleven players,” Rudi Garcia commented after the match.

Belgium, semi-finalists in 2018 but eliminated in the group stage four years prior, will now advance to the Round of 16 on July 7th, where they will face either the United States or Bosnia-Herzegovina.

For the Senegalese players, this marks their fourth World Cup appearance, ending in a match that will undoubtedly leave them with deep regrets, perhaps as profound as their controversial loss of the last Africa Cup of Nations final to Morocco. “We are eliminated, and it hurts. We must congratulate the team for giving their all, but unfortunately, we couldn’t manage our lead,” stated coach Pape Thiaw.
