Algeria and Mali restore full diplomatic ties after year-long standoff
After more than a year of diplomatic tension, Algeria and Mali have officially restored their full diplomatic relations. The breakthrough comes as Algiers reinstated its ambassador to Bamako and reopened its airspace to all civilian and military flights from and to its southern neighbor.
Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria’s president, confirmed the move in a statement, highlighting that the Algerian envoy would return to Mali immediately following the complete reopening of Algerian airspace.
In a reciprocal gesture, Mali’s military government announced it had also restored diplomatic channels with Algeria. The announcement came through an official communiqué from Bamako, underscoring the mutual commitment to normalizing relations.
what triggered the diplomatic rupture?
The year-long impasse began in April, when Algeria reported it had shot down a Malian surveillance drone for violating its airspace. Mali vehemently denied the claim, insisting the aircraft was operating well within its own borders and accused Algeria of aggressive overreach.
Tensions escalated further when Burkina Faso and Niger—both allies of Mali and members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—reciprocated the move by recalling their ambassadors from Algiers. The coordinated withdrawal signaled solidarity with Bamako and deepened the regional rift.
regional security implications
The diplomatic rupture between Algeria and Mali had sent shockwaves across the Sahel, a region already grappling with escalating insecurity. The Alliance of Sahel States, formed in 2023, has positioned itself as a counterbalance to traditional regional blocs, emphasizing self-reliance and mutual defense.
Analysts warn that prolonged diplomatic fractures could undermine coordinated efforts against armed groups operating across Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Restoring dialogue between Algiers and Bamako is seen as a critical step toward stabilizing the region.
