Marking International Museum Day, the National Museum of Chad in N’Djamena hosted its inaugural Nuit des Musées, a vibrant celebration of the country’s cultural legacy. Organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Crafts, the event transformed the museum into a lively stage after sunset on May 18, 2026.
An evening steeped in tradition and discovery
As night fell, the museum grounds buzzed with energy. The National Ballet of Chad greeted guests with vivid traditional dances, immediately immersing visitors in the country’s rich performing arts heritage.
« It’s breathtaking to witness the depth of Tchadian dance tradition firsthand. I haven’t even explored the museum’s treasures yet, and already I’m captivated by these artistic performances, » said Anne Marie-Thérèse, one of the many enchanted attendees.
Interactive experiences across the heritage landscape
The nocturnal visit unfolded through a carefully curated program. Visitors moved freely through permanent exhibits, engaging with guided tours, live storytelling by griots, and screenings of documentaries that brought both tangible and intangible heritage to life. Each activity highlighted the depth and diversity of Chad’s cultural identity.
A platform to preserve and promote cultural identity
Mbaibaidoh John Innocent, director of the National Ballet, emphasized the transformative potential of the event. « Our traditional dances embody the soul of our intangible heritage. By staging them in this setting, surrounded by artifacts from daily ancestral life, we give younger generations a living connection to their history. We hope the Nuit des Musées becomes a quarterly tradition, offering a rare platform to celebrate and safeguard our cultural roots. »
The event also drew the presence of the French Ambassador to Chad and his delegation, underscoring the global significance of initiatives aimed at protecting and promoting Chad’s cultural patrimony.
