Senegal’s Sonko to attend Francophonie Assembly in Yaoundé next July
Sources confirm the newly elected President of Senegal’s National Assembly will be in Cameroon’s capital from July 7 to 12, 2026, for a high-profile parliamentary event.
Senegal’s newly elected National Assembly President is set to make his diplomatic debut in Yaoundé next July.
After his recent removal from Senegal’s prime ministerial post, Ousmane Sonko has transitioned to leading the National Assembly. His upcoming visit to Cameroon for the 51st annual Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly (APF) session from July 7 to 12, 2026, will mark his first major international appearance in his new role.
The event presents a diplomatic baptism by fire for Sonko, whose participation will be closely watched by fellow parliamentarians. «His attendance signals Senegal’s renewed commitment to the APF, where the country plays a pivotal role. From the press conferences to the Francophone delegations, Sonko’s maiden voyage beyond Senegal’s borders is already shaping up to be one of the political highlights of this summit», insiders report.
Cameroon’s capital is reportedly pulling out all the stops to host this prestigious gathering. Under the leadership of Hilarion Etong, Vice President of Cameroon’s National Assembly and chair of the local organizing committee, the 51st APF session promises a packed agenda blending high-level diplomacy with youth engagement.
The event will coincide with the 11th Francophone Youth Parliament (PFJ), kicking off on July 6. «By hosting both events simultaneously, Cameroon and the APF are sending a powerful message about the importance of youth inclusion in governance and democratic debate. For a week, young delegates from multiple continents will simulate parliamentary debates in Yaoundé’s chambers alongside senior legislators. Between Sonko’s reshaping of West African political balances and the youth-led challenges of tomorrow, the Yaoundé session is already carving its place in Francophonie history», organizers note.
