Dakar — Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has instructed relevant ministers to implement immediate measures to mitigate flood risks before the upcoming rainy season.
During Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, the head of government emphasized the urgency of proactive planning. According to government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye, several emergency actions must be deployed without delay to strengthen flood resilience across the nation.
The Prime Minister underscored the need for strategic deployment of intervention resources and mandated a nationwide cross-ministerial simulation drill to be conducted by June 15, 2026. This exercise aims to evaluate the state’s crisis response capabilities in the face of potential natural disasters.
The cabinet’s official statement revealed ongoing preparatory measures, including cleaning of drainage networks, inspection of water control infrastructure, deployment of high-capacity pumps, and development of emergency response plans in high-risk zones.
Recognizing the cross-cutting nature of flood prevention, Sonko called for seamless interagency collaboration, with the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation leading coordination efforts. The Ministry of the Interior will provide critical support for civil protection and crisis management initiatives.
