Twelve weeks after the Lions of Teranga claimed the Africa Cup of Nations title, a longstanding debate over promised bonuses for government sports officials has reignited. The latest challenge comes from a prominent legislator, who has formally pressed the administration to clarify the status of these financial commitments.

Government officials demand clarity on promised bonuses

The controversy centers on a pledge made by the Head of State following the national team’s continental triumph. An official communication had announced a total allocation of 305 million CFA francs earmarked for bonuses to staff within the Ministry of Sports. Yet, with the passage of time, uncertainty persists regarding the actual disbursement of these funds.

The deputy from the fifteenth legislature, Guy Marius Sagna, has taken the initiative to seek answers directly from the authorities. In an official letter dated 5 May 2026, he formally inquires whether the ministry’s employees have received the promised compensation and urges the Minister of Sports to provide transparent information on the matter.

Frustration is mounting among ministry staff, many of whom played a role in supporting the national team’s preparations and success. Questions linger over the timing, fairness, and transparency of the bonus distribution process.
