Senegal’s political landscape under scrutiny: Oumar Sarr questions Diomaye Faye and Sonko’s governance
Senior political figure and former minister Oumar Sarr has raised fresh concerns about the working relationship between Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. Speaking as a key member of the Front pour la Défense de la République (FDR), Sarr highlighted the lack of clarity surrounding their alleged disagreements, suggesting these tensions may be part of a deliberate political strategy rather than genuine discord.

Uncertainty grows over Senegal’s executive leadership
In a candid television appearance, Sarr—who also serves as Mayor of Dagana—expressed doubts about the coherence of the current administration’s policy direction. While some observers interpret the public exchanges between Diomaye Faye and Sonko as signs of deep rifts, Sarr offered a different perspective. ‘There are those who believe fundamental disagreements exist,’ he noted, ‘yet no official statement has confirmed any real tension between the two leaders.’
His remarks came during a high-profile broadcast where he questioned whether the apparent conflicts were scripted for political effect. ‘At times, it feels like real disagreement. At other times, it seems as though they are simply disregarding public opinion,’ Sarr observed. He went on to describe the situation as either a genuine power struggle or a carefully orchestrated political performance. ‘Some see it as real opposition, others as political theater,’ he concluded.
