Senegal politics: minister Moussa Bala Fofana addresses PASTEF tensions

Amid rising political tensions within the PASTEF party, Minister Moussa Bala Fofana has taken a firm stance to address recent criticisms from party leader Ousmane Sonko. His response underscores unwavering loyalty to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and highlights the critical need for institutional continuity in Senegal.
Government continuity takes precedence over partisan pressures
Minister Moussa Bala Fofana, serving as the Minister of Urban Planning, Local Governments, and Territorial Development, has publicly clarified his position following public remarks by Ousmane Sonko, who had raised concerns about the political alignment of certain government members. In his statement, the minister emphasized his commitment to national stability and expressed deep appreciation for President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s renewed confidence in his leadership.
Reaffirming his personal and professional integrity, Moussa Bala Fofana acknowledged having no prior relationship with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye before the political transition. However, he praised the new administration’s focus on effective public policy implementation. He also reflected on his long-standing collaboration with Ousmane Sonko, now President of the National Assembly, describing their shared political journey as foundational to the party’s original vision.
Personal conviction over partisan obligations
Directly addressing Ousmane Sonko’s recent statements, Minister Moussa Bala Fofana firmly rejected any implication of disloyalty or defiance to the party. He stated, “I have acted freely and independently, driven solely by my public responsibilities.” His decision to remain in government, he clarified, stems from a deep sense of duty rather than political ambition or confrontation.
He framed his choice as a deliberate balance between party discipline and national duty, explaining that he prioritized the commitments made to Senegalese citizens during the 2024 campaign. “Between partisan logic and my duty to the nation, I chose to continue the mission entrusted to me.” This stance, he argued, reflects a commitment to public service where national interest supersedes short-term political considerations.
Public service above personal popularity
Moussa Bala Fofana openly acknowledged the potential backlash his stance may provoke within his former party circles. Yet, he embraced the criticism as an inevitable part of his decision, distancing himself from the pursuit of public approval in favor of administrative continuity and policy execution. He concluded with a powerful reminder: “Senegal is bigger than any one of us.” His loyalty, he asserted, belongs to the nation and the principles of responsible governance.
