Senegal politics: former mp maimouna sene attacks sonko’s judicial populism

Former National Assembly member Maïmouna Sène, a key figure in the Alliance Pour la République (APR), has sharply criticized Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, accusing his administration of deploying what she terms judicial populism to divert attention from pressing economic challenges.

The outspoken APR leader argued that while accountability is a necessary democratic principle, it should not be weaponized as a political tool to obscure the government’s shortcomings in steering Senegal toward economic recovery. Sène emphasized that the priorities of the Senegalese people—job creation, inflation control, and economic revival—must take precedence over what she described as a witch hunt mentality.

« If concrete evidence exists, present it to the courts and allow judicial proceedings to unfold transparently. The Senegalese people did not entrust the state to dwell on the past or settle personal scores—they expect decisive action against inflation, meaningful employment opportunities, and economic momentum, » Sène asserted. She went further, urging Sonko to prioritize internal accountability within his own ranks before targeting opponents, calling for fewer rhetorical threats and more tangible results.
