The first group of Burkinabè pilgrims to complete the 2026 Hajj returned to Ouagadougou on Tuesday, June 2. A total of 342 faithful disembarked at the international airport, greeted by jubilant relatives and government officials. This inaugural flight signals the start of the repatriation phase for Burkinabè pilgrims after weeks of spiritual devotion in Islam’s holiest sites.
Following the fulfillment of Islam’s fifth pillar, the initial batch of Hajj pilgrims arrived back in Burkina Faso on June 2. The chartered plane carrying the devotees landed at Ouagadougou’s international airport, formally commencing the return journey home.
Joy and gratitude mark the homecoming
Clad in vibrant boubous, the returning pilgrims radiated overwhelming joy. Their faces reflected deep satisfaction, having answered the spiritual call. Among them was Hadja Karidja Karambiri/Koné, whose emotions visibly overflowed upon stepping off the aircraft.
« Mecca exceeded all expectations. As a first-time pilgrim, I am truly fulfilled and grateful. The experience was flawless… We prayed fervently for the restoration of peace and social cohesion in Burkina Faso », she shared.
Government hails smooth pilgrimage execution
While refraining from issuing a final assessment, Saïdou Sankara, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, assured the public of the Hajj’s successful organization. He confirmed no major incidents were reported during this edition. Sankara also conveyed the government’s appreciation for the safe return of the first group.
« We bring a message of satisfaction and joy tonight, witnessing our brothers and sisters return in good health after fulfilling their pilgrimage. On behalf of the Prime Minister, we came to welcome them and extend our warmest congratulations », he stated.
« We pray this spiritual journey strengthens their faith and that their prayers in Mecca are answered—for their families and the entire nation ».

Islamic community commends organizational efforts
El Hadj Oumarou Zoungrana, representing the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina Faso (FAIB), praised the seamless execution of the pilgrimage. He extended heartfelt congratulations to the steering committee for their role in its success.
The aerial repatriation process will continue uninterrupted, bringing home the remaining Burkinabè pilgrims under the watchful eyes of both authorities and the organizing committee.
