Iyad Ag Ghaly: West Africa’s most wanted jihadist leader

Through a statement aired on national television, Malian authorities officially pledged the two-billion-CFA-franc reward, approximately three million euros, for any credible and actionable intelligence pertaining to Iyad Ag Ghaly. A former Tuareg rebel commander, Ghaly transitioned to become the formidable head of the JNIM. He is widely regarded as a primary architect of the widespread jihadist insurgency that has plagued the Sahel region for over a decade. Currently, he faces sanctions from the United Nations, is sought by the United States, and is subject to an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Additional armed leaders targeted in Mali’s intensified efforts

The Malian regime has also announced bounties for six other prominent armed figures. This list includes Amadou Kouffa, another influential leader within the JNIM, alongside the heads of the Front for the Liberation of Azawad (FLA), Alghabass Ag Intalla and Bilal Ag Cherif. Officials in Bamako assert that these individuals are suspected of complicity in planning and executing various terrorist attacks against the Malian state.

A direct response to escalating violence in Mali

This significant announcement follows just weeks after a series of coordinated assaults carried out in late April by the JNIM and its FLA allies. These attacks targeted multiple strategic positions held by the Malian army. The widespread offensives were a critical turning point in the ongoing conflict, notably resulting in the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a pivotal figure within the military regime.
