Mali joins global summit to shape the future of higher education

On June 6, 2026, the World Summit on the Future of Higher Education convened at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China. Mali was represented by Dr. Mamadou Koumaré, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Management of Bamako and coordinator of the partnership between the UNESCO International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (UNESCO-ICHEI) and Malian higher education institutions.

The event brought together experts, public officials, international organizations, higher education institutions, and leading technology firms.

The summit focused on reimagining the relationship between academia and industry, particularly in emerging technologies, to foster a new ecosystem for skill development and talent cultivation.

Discussions produced actionable insights, including proposals to strengthen capacity through innovative training programs centered on artificial intelligence and its practical applications across sectors such as agriculture, trade, education, and natural sciences. The gathering also highlighted best practices by showcasing successful tech-driven initiatives and reinforced the network of the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) through the release of a global report and the expansion of a partner ecosystem.

In addition, the meeting facilitated stronger collaboration between the technology sector and higher education, promoting a joint model for AI-driven talent development. Stakeholders were encouraged to explore curriculum innovation, hands-on skill development, and lifelong learning frameworks collaboratively.

Notably, three Malian higher education institutions—the Kurukanfuga University of Bamako, the University of Social Sciences and Management of Bamako, and the University Institute of Pedagogy—have signed partnership agreements with UNESCO-ICHEI to advance digital education and artificial intelligence in higher learning. Dr. Koumaré leads the IIOE center, which unites these three institutions.

UNESCO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Mali’s higher education sector, emphasizing the strengthening of human, technical, and technological capacities.
