Liverpool clinches champions league spot after final day draw

Liverpool secured their spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League with a 1-1 draw against Brentford at Anfield on the final day of the Premier League campaign.

The Reds entered Sunday’s clash knowing a point was all that was needed to finish fifth in England’s top flight. Curtis Jones delivered the crucial strike just before the hour mark, assisted by outgoing captain Mohamed Salah in what would be his last appearance for the club. That goal ensured the visitors took home a share of the spoils and booked Liverpool’s place in Europe’s premier club competition.

The visitors started brightly, with Ibrahima Konaté heading narrowly wide from a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross. Caoimhín Kelleher, making his first start at Anfield since joining on loan, comfortably pushed away the effort. Mohamed Salah then came agonizingly close to scoring what would have been Liverpool’s 258th and final goal for the season in the 20th minute, his free-kick rattling the post.

Dominik Szoboszlai blazed wide with a late run into the box, while Kelleher produced another sharp save to turn away Ryan Gravenberch’s curling effort from distance. Rio Ngumoha forced an early save from Brentford’s goalkeeper as Liverpool continued to probe for an opening.

Alisson Becker made a spectacular one-handed stop to deny Kevin Schade at close range before the break, keeping the score level at half-time. The second half saw Liverpool take the lead in the 59th minute through Salah, who completed a record-breaking 93rd Premier League assist for the club—a figure that surpasses Steven Gerrard’s previous total of 92.

The Egyptian winger, playing his final match for Liverpool, drifted infield before delivering a perfectly weighted cross to Curtis Jones, who nodded home from close range. The visitors equalized shortly after through Schade, who prodded in a deflected cross. Both teams then spurned chances to win the game in stoppage time, with Florian Wirtz’s effort saved superbly by Kelleher and Dango Ouattara’s header striking the crossbar.

The final whistle saw Liverpool’s supporters give standing ovations to departing players Salah and Andy Robertson, as well as Jordan Henderson, who received a hero’s welcome during his Brentford substitute appearance. The 60,325 strong crowd witnessed a hard-fought point that secured fifth place and Champions League football for Liverpool next season.
