French engineer held in Senegal after sweeping arrests
A French national working as an engineer in Dakar has been held in a Senegalese detention center since mid-February 2026. Multiple serious charges have been filed against him, including allegations that fall under the controversial category of “acts against nature.” The French government has confirmed it is closely monitoring his case.
Engineers and diplomats in Dakar are closely watching the legal proceedings involving a French expatriate, now in his early thirties, who has been held without bail since February 14, 2026. The arrest came during a broader law enforcement operation targeting multiple individuals in the capital region.
Multiple serious charges filed
The detained engineer faces a range of allegations, including “acts against nature,” criminal conspiracy, money laundering, and attempted transmission of HIV. These charges are being processed through Senegal’s judiciary, which has recently adopted a notably strict stance on such cases.
Consular assistance maintained
French diplomatic authorities have confirmed that the embassy in Dakar is providing ongoing support. Consular officials have conducted four official visits to the detention facility and remain in regular contact with the detainee’s family to ensure his well-being and legal rights are protected.
Legal landscape shifts toward stricter penalties
Senegal’s recent legislative amendments have intensified penalties for same-sex relations, with maximum sentences now reaching ten years in prison. This legal shift reflects a broader hardening of attitudes toward LGBT+ issues across the country, creating a challenging environment for foreign nationals facing related charges.
