Sonelgaz advances 40 MW tri-fuel power plant in N’Djamena
Tchad is taking a bold step toward energy independence with the launch of a 40 MW tri-fuel power plant in N’Djamena. A high-level delegation from Algeria’s Sonelgaz, led by CEO Yazid Djellouli, recently visited the Chadian capital to finalize technical studies and operational roadmaps in collaboration with Tchad-Elec teams.
What sets this project apart is its tri-fuel technology, enabling the plant to operate using natural gas, liquid fuels, or a combination of both. For N’Djamena—a city grappling with frequent power shortages and rising demand—this flexibility ensures a stable energy supply. The plant can adjust production based on fuel availability, whether sourced locally or imported, reinforcing energy security.
Beyond electricity: a partnership for skills and sustainability
The agreement goes beyond power generation. Sonelgaz, a leading North African energy provider, will transfer technical expertise to Tchad’s National Electricity Company (SNE). This includes training in maintenance, grid management, and plant optimization. By strengthening local technical capacity, the partnership aims to ensure long-term sustainability and reduce reliance on costly fossil fuel imports.
The project reflects Tchad’s strategic shift toward diversified energy partners and flexible technologies. By reducing dependence on expensive conventional fuels, the country is not only stabilizing its power grid but also fostering a more favorable business climate. Reliable energy remains a cornerstone for industrial growth and economic development in Tchad.
