Cameroon opposition demands constitutional council recognize power vacancy

The Cameroonian opposition leader Jean-Michel Nintcheu has formally requested the Constitutional Council to declare a power vacancy at the helm of the State.
President Paul Biya left Cameroon for a private visit to Switzerland on June 7 and has not returned to Yaoundé after 44 days abroad. This extended absence has reignited discussions about the 93-year-old leader’s health. Within political circles and public opinion, reactions vary depending on political affiliations.
In a Facebook post dated July 17, National Assembly member Jean-Michel Nintcheu, a former SDF party cadre from Douala, urged the Constitutional Council to recognize the power vacuum. “The Constitutional Council must declare the vacancy at the summit of the State,” he stated.
Ruling party dismisses concerns
Meanwhile, the ruling RDPC party has sought to reassure the public. Speaking from Geneva where President Biya remains, Christophe Mien Zok, RDPC propaganda director, stated: “The power is not vacant. The Lion has not left.” Despite his absence, President Biya has continued to sign official correspondence and congratulatory messages, including one sent to French President Emmanuel Macron on July 14 marking France’s National Day.
