Benin enhances emergency medical care with 600 new oxygen concentrators

The healthcare landscape in Benin is undergoing a significant transformation. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, the Minister of Health, took delivery of 600 state-of-the-art oxygen concentrators. This new equipment is set to improve the emergency response capabilities of 23 health centers across the country.

Advanced technology to protect lives

Acquired through UNICEF with financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this medical equipment represents an investment of over 205,450 USD (approximately 116 million FCFA). These “10LPM single flow” concentrators are designed to provide a steady supply of oxygen, a critical requirement for patients suffering from acute respiratory failure.

This massive distribution effort focuses on 23 hospitals and clinics located in the departments of Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.

A strategic move to lower maternal and infant mortality

Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin highlighted that this donation is more than just a technical upgrade; it is a vital part of a broader strategy to decrease maternal, neonatal, and child mortality rates. During the official ceremony, he stated that the availability of oxygen is essential for ensuring that every citizen has access to high-quality medical services, regardless of their location.

Strengthening international health cooperation

The handover event was attended by the Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Wei Zhang, and the UNICEF Resident Representative, Mr. Ousmane Niang. The Ambassador praised the strong diplomatic relationship between China and Benin, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to supporting the local health sector. Meanwhile, the UNICEF representative pointed out that these devices, made possible by the generosity of individual donors in China, will greatly improve the resilience of Benin’s healthcare system during life-threatening emergencies.

This upgrade to the technical infrastructure of health facilities reinforces the government’s ongoing commitment to modernizing the national medical platform and providing more efficient public health services.
