Bénin and Togo forge stronger bonds with renewed cooperation agenda
Bénin’s leadership recently highlighted a friendship and working visit to Lomé on June 3, marking the first regional tour led by the country’s new President. Meanwhile, Togo’s government described Romuald Wadagni’s trip as a response to an invitation extended by President Faure Gnassingbé, who also serves as Togo’s Prime Minister. One undeniable outcome? Both nations are now committed to reshaping their partnership.
This brief but significant meeting took place within the framework of deep-rooted historical ties—built on decades of friendship, solidarity, and mutual trust. A joint statement emphasized how both governments are now prioritizing a strategic partnership focused on sustainable development and shared prosperity for their citizens.
The two leaders praised the centuries-old tradition of peaceful coexistence between their peoples, vowing to deepen collaboration across all sectors of mutual interest. They stressed the need for ongoing political dialogue as a cornerstone for resolving disputes, preventing conflicts, and fostering regional stability.
Economic relations also took center stage. Both presidents celebrated the steady growth in trade exchanges between Bénin and Togo. They agreed to expand efforts in boosting cross-border connectivity, easing trade flows, attracting private investments, and leveraging economic synergies to drive shared growth.
Security concerns dominated part of the discussions. The leaders expressed grave concerns over the rising threats of terrorism, violent extremism, and transnational crime plaguing West Africa. Reaffirming their resolve, they pledged to strengthen security ties, enhance intelligence-sharing, and secure their shared borders.
As the visit concluded, Romuald Wadagni extended an official invitation to President Faure Gnassingbé—the region’s longest-serving leader—to visit Bénin. The timing and arrangements will be finalized through diplomatic channels. Notably, Gnassingbé has not visited Bénin during Patrice Talon’s decade-long presidency.
