Benin 2026 presidential election: ‘les démocrates’ congratulates wadagni-talata and outlines key recommendations

Benin’s prominent opposition party, « Les Démocrates », formally extended its republican felicitations to the newly elected duo of Romuald Wadagni and Mariam Chabi Talata. This congratulatory message, dated April 14, 2026, acknowledged their victory in the country’s recent presidential election. In their official communication, the political faction, which stands in opposition to President Patrice Talon’s administration, also articulated specific aspirations for the incoming government prior to its official assumption of duties.

« Les Démocrates » conveyed its congratulations to the Wadagni-Talata team for their successful election to lead Benin. As detailed in a communiqué from April 14, 2026, the opposition group, critical of President Patrice Talon’s government, addressed its well wishes to the president-elect and his running mate.

The message stated, « The provisional results announced by the National Autonomous Electoral Commission (CENA) clearly indicate your DUO as the decisive winner of the presidential election held on April 12, 2026. Despite its exclusion from this electoral process, the ‘Les Démocrates’ party acknowledges these results and extends its republican congratulations on your election to the supreme magistracy of our nation. »

The political entity, currently under the leadership of President Atchadé, also put forth a series of recommendations for the new occupants of the Palais de la Marina.

« In adherence to our steadfast commitment to democratic principles and peace, we express our profound hope that your mandate will be characterized by national unity, social justice, the re-establishment of an inclusive democratic framework, and the scrupulous respect for fundamental liberties. This vital agenda, in our view, necessitates the liberation of political detainees, the safe return of political exiles, genuine political consultation, a development strategy centered on human dignity and social progress, and the comprehensive restoration of individual freedoms, » the « Les Démocrates » party urged.

Concluding its statement, the party affirmed its readiness to engage in constructive dialogue and propose pertinent alternatives whenever such contributions prove necessary for the nation’s progress.
