Wolfsburg and Paderborn play out goalless draw in Bundesliga relegation playoff first leg

The Bundesliga relegation playoff first leg ended in a frustrating stalemate on Thursday evening. Wolfsburg, languishing in 16th position in Germany’s top flight, were held to a 0-0 draw by Paderborn at home. The second leg in the Second Division will now determine which team secures survival in the Bundesliga.
Just days after securing their playoff spot with a crucial 3-1 victory over Sankt Pauli, Wolfsburg faced a must-win scenario at home. Paderborn, on the other hand, arrived with a contrasting momentum after clinching third place in 2.Bundesliga on the final matchday with a 2-0 win over Darmstadt, compounded by Hannover’s 3-3 draw against Nuremberg.
First-half drama unfolds
Paderborn started the stronger side, aggressively pressing and creating the best chance of the first half from a corner kick, which forced Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara into a spectacular double save. However, after this early scare, the Wolves gradually took control, with captain Christian Eriksen driving their midfield dominance.
Wolfsburg’s dominance falls short
Despite enjoying 63% possession and mustering 15 shots, Wolfsburg struggled to break down Paderborn’s disciplined defensive block. The home side’s dominance was evident, with eight attempts to Paderborn’s lone effort before halftime. The second half saw relentless pressure from Wolfsburg, but they lacked the cutting edge to convert their territorial advantage into goals.
The deadlock was sealed when Paderborn were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time after Jonah Sticker received a second booking. The visitors held firm, preserving their 0-0 draw and shifting the pressure to Wolfsburg for the return leg in the Second Division on Monday evening at 20:30.
