Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, has shed light on the circumstances surrounding his unexpected removal from office. In a candid press briefing, he detailed the final moments of his collaboration with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, putting an end to weeks of speculation.
Unpacking the political split
Sonko revealed that the President summoned him to the Presidential Palace, where Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed his belief that their partnership had reached its limits. According to Sonko, the Head of State cited several public statements as problematic. Rather than accepting blame, Sonko chose to confront the situation head-on. “I told him if he wants to dismiss me, he should take responsibility and do it,” Sonko declared, shifting the narrative away from his own actions.
An offer that went unanswered
The opposition leader also disclosed that he had previously proposed stepping down from the government to lead the National Assembly while pledging continued support for the administration. This overture, however, remained unaddressed by the President.
Claiming the moral high ground
Sonko emphasized his refusal to bear the burden of this separation. “I could not be held accountable for this outcome,” he asserted, framing the decision as one dictated by the President himself.
