The 16th annual general meeting of an association supporting a village in northern Mali took place recently, highlighting ongoing challenges in the country.
The president, Marie-Jo Mennelet, opened the meeting with a heavy heart, sharing grim updates from Mali: “The situation in the country has worsened, with jihadist attacks, shortages, power and water cuts, rising prices, and scorching heat making life unbearable for many.”
Despite these hardships, the association remains deeply connected to its partners in Forgho and Bamako, continuing to fulfill its commitments with steadfast solidarity. Marie-Jo Mennelet noted that schools in Forgho and Kotchekaraï remain operational, unlike many institutions in northern and central regions. While no new sponsorships were initiated this year, existing ones have been sustained through the generosity of members and donors.
Funds raised have supported school supplies for the new academic year, school canteens, final exams, medical supplies, seeds for farming, and essential repairs in schools and villages. Limited public events were held this year, but donations still flowed in from concerts and theater performances.
The financial report was positive, with revenue from donations, memberships, and sponsorships covering expenses primarily allocated to education, healthcare, agriculture, and the Bamako orphanage, along with occasional aid for families and teachers.
With unanimous approval of the reports and the re-election of the board, the general meeting concluded with warm camaraderie and heartfelt exchanges.
