Shameful cowardice: FC Nantes supporter leader condemns league 1 chaos

Following the chaotic scenes that forced officials to abandon the recent FC Nantes vs Toulouse Ligue 1 match, the fallout has begun. Roland Menu, president of the “Allez Nantes Canaris” supporters’ club, brands the violence as an affront to everything the sport stands for.

The final whistle never sounded. What should have been a competitive football match between FC Nantes and Toulouse descended into mayhem Sunday evening. Pitch invasions, flying objects, and lit black smoke bombs marred proceedings, forcing authorities to call an abrupt end to the game.

Roland Menu has spent six decades supporting FC Nantes. His “Allez Nantes Canaris” group represents the club’s loyal fanbase. He shares his unfiltered reaction to the weekend’s disgraceful scenes:

Do you share coach Vahid Halilhodžić’s sentiments, or other fans’ descriptions of the perpetrators as “shameful” and “cowardly”?

Absolutely. These were cowardly acts. I’m devastated by what happened. While we’re all frustrated with the team’s current situation, storming the pitch crosses every line. We know the consequences our club will face, and this behavior achieves nothing positive.

Were you anticipating such extreme actions from ultras?

We expected some form of protest, possibly at full-time, but nothing of this scale or intensity during the match. The sheer violence and speed of the invasion caught everyone off guard.

Coach Halilhodžić’s visibly emotional reaction mirrored many fans’ sentiments. Do you share his disappointment?

Without question. His plea was for calm and a return to the stands so play could resume. As his final match in charge, it’s particularly heartbreaking. The coach wanted to finish on a competitive note, and these individuals robbed him of that opportunity.

Sanctions are inevitable. The league’s decision won’t arrive until May 27th. Are you concerned about potential stadium bans?

The immediate fear is closed-door matches. Come August, we could face two or three games without fans. Losing league points would compound our challenges—imagine beginning next season with a handicap. Saint-Étienne suffered this four years ago after a similar incident.

The Brigade Loire, a group linked to past disturbances, has faced calls for dissolution. Does this address the root issue?

Brigade Loire isn’t a supporters’ club—it’s a faction. While they contribute atmosphere, their recent actions betray football’s spirit. Pitch invasions by any group, regardless of affiliation, have no place in supporter culture. True fandom means supporting the team through every outcome, not sabotaging it.

Will this deter your lifelong commitment to FC Nantes, even if the club faces relegation?

Never. Sixty years of highs and lows have taught us one truth: the club comes first. Poor leadership, financial struggles, or league demotions can’t diminish our loyalty. FC Nantes defines us, and we’ll stand by the team regardless of the circumstances.
