Senegal’s president Bassirou Diomaye Faye ends Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s mandate

During a televised address from the Republic Palace in Dakar, Oumar Samba Ba, Secretary-General of the Presidency, announced the termination of Ousmane Sonko’s role as Prime Minister of Senegal. The decree also dissolved the entire government cabinet, with all ministers and state secretaries relieved of their duties.
« By Decree No. 2026-1128 dated May 22, 2026, President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye has terminated the functions of Mr. Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister, and consequently, those of all ministers and state secretaries. The outgoing government members are tasked with handling current affairs until further notice », Oumar Samba Ba stated.
The decision follows months of escalating tensions between President Faye and Prime Minister Sonko, a political mentor who initially positioned Faye as his successor after being barred from the 2024 presidential race.
