Senegal politics: apr leader challenges sonko to take proof to courts

Dakar — A senior figure in Senegal’s political landscape has fired a sharp warning at Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, urging him to channel any evidence of wrongdoing through the proper judicial channels rather than engaging in what she calls political grandstanding.

Maimouna Sène, Executive Secretary of the national secretariat of Alliance Pour la République (APR), delivered a pointed critique of the government’s performance and accused it of using accountability debates as a political tool rather than a genuine effort to serve the public interest.

Demanding substance over rhetoric

In a bold public statement, Sène challenged the Prime Minister to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete action. ‘If you have evidence, present it to the courts and let justice take its course without interference,’ she emphasized, stressing that accountability should not be weaponized for political gain.

She condemned what she described as ‘judicial populism’ and ‘distractions’ from the country’s real challenges, arguing that the government’s focus should remain firmly on addressing the pressing economic and social concerns facing Senegal.

Priorities must shift to the people

The APR leader highlighted the urgent need for the administration to tackle inflation, boost job creation, and revive economic growth. ‘The people of Senegal deserve leadership that prioritizes action over speeches,’ she asserted. ‘It is time for deeds, not declarations.’

Sène also called on the Prime Minister to demonstrate leadership by example, setting a standard of integrity in public office. Her remarks underscore growing tensions within Senegal’s political environment as leaders debate the best path forward for the nation.
