The High Authority for Party Regulation (HARP) of PASTEF-Les Patriotes officially commenced the process for electing the party president on May 14, 2026. According to Decision n°001/2026/HARP, applications for candidacies are being accepted from May 15 until noon on May 20, 2026.
A procedure reflecting Diomaye’s critiques?
This decision notably avoids granting any exclusive advantage to the incumbent president, Ousmane Sonko. Instead, it formally opens the competition to all factions within the party, allowing the current Prime Minister the opportunity to seek a renewed mandate without guaranteeing automatic access to the party’s top position.
The establishment of this formal competitive process directly echoes the public statements made by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who had previously criticized the party for being excessively « personified ». By implementing an open and regulated procedure, HARP directly addresses this critique, simultaneously raising questions about PASTEF’s leadership during a pivotal period.
When questioned recently about the party’s candidate for the 2029 presidential election, Diomaye Faye had stipulated that any designation would be contingent upon the conclusions of the upcoming congress, indicating that the candidate selection remained an open internal matter. The staging of this party leadership election serves as a crucial preliminary step before that broader debate unfolds.
Five days for candidacy submissions
HARP has set a tight schedule: prospective candidates have a mere five working days to compile and submit their applications, utilizing a standard declaration form appended to the decision. HARP’s deliberation to adopt this measure took place during a special session held on May 14, 2026.
The outcome of this internal ballot will determine who officially embodies PASTEF leading up to the next congress, where the critical decision regarding the 2029 presidential candidacy is expected to be made.
