Ousmane Sonko has been elected President of Senegal’s National Assembly, just four days after his dismissal as Prime Minister. The vote took place this Tuesday, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
The leader of the ruling Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) party secured 132 votes out of 133 cast, demonstrating strong parliamentary support. He takes over from El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned from the position last Sunday.

Political transition follows PM’s removal
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the new Prime Minister on Monday evening. Lô previously served as Minister responsible for monitoring and evaluating the ‘National Transformation Program 2050’ and as Secretary-General of the Government of Senegal.
The rapid political developments reflect the dynamic nature of Senegal’s governance, with Sonko’s election to the Assembly presidency occurring shortly after his removal from the PM position. This move consolidates his influence within the ruling party and legislature.
