Senegal market modernization ousmane sonko unveils major restructuring plan

Senegal’s markets are undergoing a sweeping transformation under new national plan

The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, has highlighted the urgent need to revamp the country’s aging market infrastructure, much of which dates back to the 1970s. Speaking during a national address, he underscored the severe security risks plaguing these commercial hubs, citing that between 2013 and 2024, at least 53 markets across Senegal were affected by devastating fires.

To address these pressing challenges, Ousmane Sonko introduced the Market Modernization and Management Program (PROMOGEM), a strategic initiative spanning 2025 to 2029. The plan includes the complete overhaul of 528 existing markets and the construction of 67 new, state-of-the-art facilities nationwide.

The Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of institutional reform within PROMOGEM to enhance its operational independence and financial sustainability. As part of this effort, the government has allocated a four-year budget of 57.5 billion CFA francs under the Public Investment Plan to fund these critical upgrades.

The ultimate goal of this ambitious project is to establish a modern, efficient market network across Senegal, fostering collaboration between local governments, private sector stakeholders, and community leaders to ensure sustainable development and improved service delivery.
