Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko expressed strong frustration during Thursday’s inter-ministerial council meeting over the glacial pace of judicial proceedings concerning financial accountability cases.

According to participants, the Prime Minister directly challenged Justice Minister Yassine Fall after her presentation, questioning the judiciary’s effectiveness in handling cases of alleged financial mismanagement.

Sonko highlighted multiple instances where public funds appear to have been misappropriated without visible judicial outcomes, warning that such delays undermine public confidence in government institutions. He emphasized that the lack of concrete judicial decisions creates an environment where impunity persists, threatening the credibility of ongoing governance reforms.

The Prime Minister went further, demanding accountability at all levels, including both former and current administrative and political officials. He described what he termed structural dysfunctions in the judicial chain that appear to be systematically delaying sensitive cases.

In response, Justice Minister Fall acknowledged the challenges faced by her department but assured that efforts were actively underway to expedite pending cases. She noted that judicial services remain committed to pursuing implicated individuals whenever sufficient evidence exists, despite institutional and operational constraints.

Sonko maintained his pressure, calling for greater transparency in case monitoring and swifter judicial processes. He reiterated that financial accountability remains a cornerstone of the current administration’s mandate, essential for restoring public trust in state institutions.

The Prime Minister concluded by stressing that judicial cases involving public interest must be handled with rigor and urgency to preserve citizen confidence in Senegal’s democratic institutions.
