The government of Senegal has made it clear that it will not finance the travel of supporters to the United States for the FIFA World Cup 2026, according to the Minister of Sports, Khady Diène Gaye.
This decision puts an end to weeks of speculation about an official delegation of fans accompanying the national team, the Lions of Teranga, during the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Government cites visa challenges and sovereignty
Speaking on Sud FM, Minister Gaye emphasized that each nation holds sovereign authority over such decisions. She noted that Senegal is unable to secure visas for large groups of supporters, as three key fan club leaders were previously denied entry.
« We cannot take responsibility for transporting supporters from Dakar to the United States, » she stated firmly. « This edition will rely on the initiative of individual fans or those already based abroad. »
What this means for Teranga Nation
Without state-backed travel arrangements, the burden falls on passionate supporters to fund their own journeys. While this may limit the number of fans present, the Senegalese diaspora and independent travelers are expected to play a vital role in cheering on the Lions during the 2026 World Cup.
