Growing political tensions between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye
The widening political divide between Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef-Les Patriotes party, and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has become undeniable. In a press briefing held in Dakar, the former Prime Minister outlined the reasons behind his party’s decision to refuse participation in the new government led by Ahmadou Alamine Mohamed Lô.
The refusal stems from fundamental disagreements over critical national policies. Key areas of contention include judicial reform, accountability measures, renegotiation of unfavorable economic contracts, and public debt management. Sonko emphasized that these differences were not negotiable and reflected deep-rooted concerns about the country’s direction.
Sonko further highlighted the lack of assurances regarding financial commitments from the government and future engagements with international lenders. His concerns extended to the administration’s approach to subsidies and its judicial governance strategy, which he deemed incompatible with the party’s vision for progress.
The composition of the new cabinet added another layer of contention. Sonko argued that his party, which holds a majority in Senegal’s political landscape, deserved significant representation in the executive branch. He insisted that participation in the government would require control of at least half of the ministerial portfolios, a condition he claimed was not met.
Despite the inclusion of several individuals aligned with his movement, Sonko questioned the new government’s political legitimacy. However, he clarified that the Pastef would not pursue motions of no confidence or other measures to destabilize the administration—for now. This stance underscores the escalating uncertainty in the relationship between the presidency and the party that spearheaded the 2024 political transition.
