Paris Saint-Germain on the brink of another ligue 1 title

  • Paris Saint-Germain faces second-place RC Lens on Wednesday, May 13th, in a rescheduled Ligue 1 fixture.
  • This crucial encounter could see the Parisian giants clinch their fifth consecutive French championship title.

Could PSG be heading for a double triumph? Having already secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League final for the second successive year, the squad from the Parc des Princes has the opportunity to claim their initial piece of silverware this Wednesday, May 13th. Dominating the top of the league table with 73 points, the Parisians are set to visit Lens (kick-off 9 PM), who have enjoyed a remarkable season themselves, firmly holding second place with 67 points. This encounter is a crucial make-up game from the 29th round of Ligue 1.

The capital club, aiming for its 14th overall title in the competition – and an impressive fifth in a row – now has a golden chance to etch its name further into history. Paris Saint-Germain could become only the third team in the 21st century to mathematically clinch the Ligue 1 championship during a direct confrontation with its eventual runner-up. This rare feat has previously been achieved by Lyon in the 2001-2002 season and, notably, by PSG themselves in 2017-2018.

A draw or victory will officially crown Paris Saint-Germain champions

To secure the coveted trophy as early as this Wednesday, Luis Enrique’s squad simply needs to avoid defeat. A draw at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, a venue where the northern side has only suffered two losses this season, would be enough to bring joy to the Parisians. Accumulating 74 points, they would then be mathematically out of reach for Lens (who would have 68 points) heading into the final matchday on Sunday, May 17th. Similarly, a triumph for Paris would also definitively seal the championship’s fate, widening their lead even further.

Significant goal difference provides a crucial advantage

Conversely, to maintain even a glimmer of hope, Lens is under immense pressure to secure a victory on their home turf. They face a Parisian side somewhat hampered by injuries to key players such as Nuno Mendes, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Lee Kang-In, and Achraf Hakimi. Should Lens emerge victorious, they would reach 70 points, closing the gap to three points behind their evening opponents. This scenario would theoretically allow them to draw level on points during the 38th and final matchday, provided a highly improbable alignment of circumstances, including a PSG defeat in their derby against Paris FC.

However, even this unlikely sequence of events would probably not be enough to deny Marquinhos and his teammates another championship. Paris Saint-Germain boasts a significantly superior goal difference (+44 compared to Lens’ +29), which serves as the decisive tie-breaker in Ligue 1. In essence, even a defeat for PSG would likely not cost them the top spot, unless Lens manages to overcome the substantial 15-goal deficit in goal difference, a truly monumental task.

Parisian coach Luis Enrique certainly acknowledged the situation following his team’s 1-0 victory over Brest. He remarked, “We must commend Lens for their season-long performance; they’ve played at an incredible level, making it very tough for us,” adding confidently, “but we are already champions, 99.9%.” The question now remains whether that percentage will hit a full 100% this Wednesday, or if the definitive confirmation will have to wait until the final weekend of the competition.
