The United Nations has reported that over 300 civilians have lost their lives in attacks carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since the beginning of the year. These tragic incidents have primarily occurred in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces.
In a recent overnight assault between May 30 and 31, the village of Ngadi, located near Beni in North Kivu, became the site of a brutal attack. Local authorities confirmed that 15 civilians and one soldier were killed during this violent raid.
Over a span of just three days, ADF rebels launched multiple attacks in the Beni region, resulting in the deaths of more than 40 civilians. These incidents have drawn widespread concern over the escalating insecurity in eastern DRC.
The ADF, which has been active in the eastern DRC since the mid-1990s, has been responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians over the years. In 2019, the group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, and the extremist organization has since claimed several attacks attributed to the ADF as part of its so-called “Central Africa Province.”
