Nice faces two empty stadium penalties following Allianz Riviera chaos

The disciplinary committee of France’s professional football league has handed down harsh penalties to OGC Nice following chaotic scenes at the Allianz Riviera during the final Ligue 1 match against Metz. The club has been ordered to play two matches behind closed doors and face one suspended game, with the sanctions directly impacting their upcoming fixtures.

The penalties stem from multiple infractions including pyrotechnic devices, pitch invasions, and stadium damage at the final whistle of the season-ending fixture. While the club has announced their intention to appeal, the immediate consequences remain significant. The second leg of their relegation playoff against AS Saint-Étienne on May 29 will be played without spectators, regardless of the appeal outcome.

The first-leg away game at Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium on May 26 already saw Nice without suspended striker Elye Wahi. The club’s appeal aims to reverse the closed-doors sanction for the home leg, though such requests rarely succeed in overturning initial disciplinary rulings.

Other sanctions handed down

Additional disciplinary measures were announced across Ligue 1:

  • Benjamin André (Lille) faces a mandatory one-match suspension following his fifth booking of the season
  • Mahdi Camara (Stade Rennais FC) and Christian Mawissa (AS Monaco) each receive one-match suspensions
  • PSG has been penalized with the closure of the Auteuil stand for their opening 2026-27 Ligue 1 home match, due to pyrotechnics and visual displays

The case regarding FC Nantes following their pitch invasion against Toulouse at match start will be addressed in separate proceedings.
