Morocco renews commitment to UN peace operations in talks with Lacroix

Moroccan minister of foreign affairs, african cooperation, and moroccan expatriates, Nasser Bourita, welcomed UN under-secretary-general for peace operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix in Rabat on monday. This marks Lacroix’s second official visit to the kingdom.

The talks focused on the significant role and substantial, exemplary contribution of the kingdom of Morocco to united nations peacekeeping operations.

Morocco’s involvement stems from a strategic royal vision rooted in its longstanding commitment to UN peace operations, a dedication that has been ongoing since 1960.

Morocco currently ranks ninth among the top troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions. It also chairs the UN peacebuilding commission (PBC) for 2026 and serves as coordinator for the non-aligned movement (NAM) on peacekeeping matters. These roles reflect the international community’s trust in Morocco regarding peace and security issues.

Lacroix’s visit comes at a time when the UN secretary-general has launched wide-ranging reform initiatives, including the ‘UN 80’ agenda to streamline the UN secretariat, as well as a strategic and comprehensive review of all peacekeeping operations and the international peace and security architecture. The goal is to restore the primacy of political solutions in conflict management.
