Morocco joins second peace-security-development nexus conference in mombasa

Morocco takes center stage at Mombasa conference on peace-security-development nexus

African Union meeting discussing unified continental approaches

Morocco actively participates in the second Political Conference on the peace-security-development nexus, taking place in Mombasa, Kenya on July 11-12.

The conference follows the first edition held in Tangiers, Morocco, from October 25-27, 2022, which resulted in the Tangiers Declaration. This landmark document established an integrated African vision for the nexus, emphasizing coordinated public policies, strengthened partnerships, and concrete project implementation to foster sustainable peace, security, and development across the continent.

The Tangiers Process has since emerged as Africa’s premier dialogue platform on the interdependence between peace, security, and development. It gathers key continental and international stakeholders including the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nations Development Programme, the African Export-Import Bank, and the African Development Bank.

The Mombasa gathering aims to assess progress made in implementing the Tangiers Declaration while identifying practical approaches to strengthen the nexus between peace, security, and development in Africa.

The discussions will unfold across five thematic panels covering:

  • Implementation of the Tangiers Declaration through targeted projects
  • The role of artificial intelligence and youth-led innovations
  • Linking security expenditures with development priorities
  • Mobilizing financing for Nexus projects
  • Key lessons from the African Union’s support to complex political transitions

Leading Morocco’s delegation, Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi — Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa — will present Morocco’s integrated vision for peace, security, and development. This approach prioritizes strengthened partnerships and homegrown African solutions tailored to the continent’s unique priorities and realities.
