Mjällby makes historic champions league debut with 3-0 win

Swedish champions Mjällby kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign in spectacular fashion, dominating Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps 3-0 on Tuesday evening. The emphatic victory at their Strandvallen stadium marked a dream debut in European competition for the surprise 2026 Allsvenskan winners.

The first half proved decisive as Mjällby raced to a commanding lead. Faroese striker Aki Samuelsen, aged 22, opened the scoring with two clinical finishes in the 18th and 24th minutes before midfielder Jacob Bergström doubled the advantage just before halftime at the 31-minute mark. Samuelsen nearly completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, but his effort was saved by the Lincoln Red Imps goalkeeper, leaving the score unchanged through the second half.

Gibraltar rematch looms

Mjällby will face Lincoln Red Imps again next Tuesday (18:00 CET) in the return leg at Gibraltar’s Victoria Stadium. The victorious side will advance to the third qualifying round to face either Georgia’s Iberia 1999 or Slovakia’s Slovan Bratislava, who secured a 2-0 away win in their own qualifier on Tuesday.

The Swedish side, managed by Karl Marius Aksum, joins an elite group of clubs participating in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, alongside familiar names like Fenerbahçe, BSC Young Boys, Dinamo Zagreb, Heart of Midlothian, Red Star Belgrade, and FC Kairat.
