Mali faces rising tensions as opposition figures vanish

Mountaga Tall, a prominent Malian opposition leader and lawyer, has been missing since his abduction on May 2nd, while his eldest son, Cheick Mamadou Tall, disappeared just two weeks later. The timing of these events has intensified concerns about the deteriorating political climate in the country.

Opposition lawyer’s family targeted in wave of arrests

Me Tall, a key figure in the 2020 Movement of the 5th June (M5-RFP) that ousted former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, has faced increasing pressure since distancing himself from the current military regime. His legal team confirmed that armed, masked individuals forcibly took him from his home in the early hours of May 2nd.

Sixteen days later, his eldest son vanished without a trace after receiving a phone call. The collective of four defense attorneys representing the family issued a statement expressing alarm over these illegal detentions and demanding immediate intervention from judicial authorities to secure their release and investigate the circumstances.

Political repression escalates under military rule

These incidents occur amid a broader crackdown on dissent in Mali, where the junta has systematically restricted civil liberties. Me Tall has recently taken on cases defending military officers accused of attempting to destabilize state institutions. Additionally, he has challenged the military government’s controversial decision to dissolve political parties—a move that has drawn widespread condemnation.

The recent wave of violence adds another layer of complexity to the crisis. On April 25th, coordinated attacks by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, Al-Qaeda affiliate) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) targeted strategic military positions, underscoring the fragile security situation.

As the political and security landscape continues to deteriorate, the disappearances of Mountaga Tall and his son highlight the growing risks faced by those who challenge the status quo in Mali.
