Le Mans promoted to Ligue 1, Bastia relegated to Ligue 3 after disciplinary ruling
The Ligue de Football Professionnel’s disciplinary board has officially validated Le Mans’ 2-0 victory over Bastia, confirming the Manceaux’s promotion to Ligue 1. In contrast, Bastia faces relegation to Ligue 3 following stadium incidents, with two enforced home matches behind closed doors and one suspended closure.
The disciplinary commission of France’s top football league convened last Wednesday evening to confirm the results of the Ligue 2 clash between Bastia and Le Mans, settled 2-0 in favor of the visitors in the 34th matchday. With only seconds remaining, referee Ruddy Buquet halted play, evacuating players to the locker rooms after fireworks and smoke bombs rained down from the stands.
Bastia dodges point deduction
The Corsican club will serve two immediate home matches behind closed doors, with a third suspended closure. However, it narrowly escaped a one-point deduction for next season—a sanction that had loomed over the club following recent misconduct. Bastia was already under probation after disturbances during a match against Red Star in December, when play was abandoned after a smoke bomb was thrown onto the pitch from the supporters’ section.
“Typically, a point deduction occurs when a match participant is directly affected,” explained Sébastien Deneux, president of the LFP’s disciplinary board. “In this case, no player or official was hit by any projectile during the Bastia-Le Mans game. Therefore, we saw no justification to activate the probationary measure.”
