Laurent Gbagbo re-elected as leader of Côte d’Ivoire’s PPA-CI party
Thousands of party members gathered in Abidjan to reaffirm their support for the veteran leader during an ordinary congress.
Ivorian political party PPA-CI has re-elected Laurent Gbagbo as its leader during an ordinary congress held in Abidjan. The 80-year-old former president begins a new term at the helm of the party he founded following his return from the International Criminal Court.
On May 14, the PPA-CI party officially re-elected Laurent Gbagbo as its president during its first ordinary congress at the Treichville Cultural Center in Abidjan. Nearly 3,000 delegates attended the event, where the former Ivorian head of state secured a decisive victory.
Laurent Gbagbo, now 80 years old, had previously announced in 2025—during an interview with Alain Foka—his intention to step down from official party duties while remaining politically active. However, facing strong pressure from his supporters, he ultimately agreed to continue leading the PPA-CI.
Through this congress, the party aims to strengthen its internal organization and revitalize its grassroots structures. PPA-CI leaders also hope that Gbagbo’s new term will mark a gradual transition toward a new generation of leadership.
The re-election underscores the enduring influence of Laurent Gbagbo within Côte d’Ivoire’s political landscape, despite his controversial past and legal battles.
