Lansana Gagny Sakho clarifies stance on Sonko and republican values

The president of the Board of Directors of APIX, Lansana Gagny Sakho, recently shared his perspective on the political rift that has emerged, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to the Republic. In a candid interview, he explained his decision to distance himself from Ousmane Sonko, despite initially aligning with the Pastef movement’s vision. His alignment with the party stemmed from admiration for its leadership, though he drew a clear line when offered a high-ranking position in water and sanitation after the political transition.

« I prioritized my principles over positions, » Sakho stated. « That decision allowed me to step back without hesitation. From the outset, I chose the Republic. » His remarks underscore a fundamental difference in their approaches to governance, with Sakho framing his stance as a defense of institutional integrity.

In contrast, he accused Ousmane Sonko of undermining the Republic’s cohesion through public statements that, he claims, weakened the government’s authority. He pointed to a specific instance during President Diomaye Faye’s official visits to the United States and China, where Sonko publicly criticized the administration’s leadership, allegedly causing embarrassment for the head of state.

Sakho argued that true political leadership lies in strengthening state institutions, acknowledging challenges on both sides but highlighting progress in sectors like justice. He reflected on recent reforms at the Ministry of Justice, where the dismissal of the former Minister, Ousmane Diagne, was allegedly intended to install a more compliant leader—an attempt he dismissed as misguided.

« Magistrates are not puppets, » he asserted. « The realities of power are far more complex than opposition voices suggest. » His comments reflect a broader tension between political factions, with multiple Pastef members recently defecting to support President Faye’s administration ahead of the launch of the Kiiraay party.

Through his statements, Lansana Gagny Sakho reaffirms his alignment with the current government’s direction, advocating for stability and the preservation of Senegal’s democratic institutions.
