Lansana Gagny Sakho clarifies his stance on Sonko and republican choices

In a bold interview, Lansana Gagny Sakho, Chairman of the Board of the APIX, addressed his political divergence from Ousmane Sonko while firmly upholding his commitment to the nation’s institutions. Speaking on a national morning show, he shared his perspective on why he distanced himself from the leader of Pastef, despite initially aligning with the party’s vision.

The former ally of Sonko revealed that his political alignment was inspired by the individuals behind the movement, not necessarily its policies alone. After the transition in power, he recounted turning down a high-profile appointment in the water and sanitation sector to stay true to his principles. “I prioritized my convictions over positions. That decision made my exit seamless. From the start, I chose the Republic,” he stated emphatically.

Contrasting visions of governance

Lansana Gagny Sakho delivered a sharp critique of Ousmane Sonko, accusing him of undermining the nation’s stability through public statements that he deemed reckless. He specifically pointed to a moment when Sonko publicly questioned the government’s authority while the president was on an official visit abroad—a move Sakho argued embarrassed the administration and deepened divisions at the highest level.

For Sakho, the essence of politics lies in strengthening institutions and ensuring the state functions effectively. While acknowledging that challenges existed on both sides, he highlighted significant progress, particularly in the justice sector, as evidence of the government’s commitment to reform.

Justice reforms and political narratives

The former ally also addressed recent shifts in the Ministry of Justice, recalling a heated exchange where the former Minister of Justice, Ousmane Diagne, declared before parliament that no one could manipulate him. Sakho suggested that this replacement was an attempt to install a more compliant leader to sway judicial decisions. “They underestimated the judiciary—magistrates are far from puppets,” he remarked, emphasizing that the realities of governance differ vastly from opposition perceptions.

Sakho has consistently voiced his support for President Diomaye Faye, underscoring the importance of continuity and institutional stability. His recent remarks come amid a wave of defections within Pastef, as several party members have defected to the presidential camp ahead of the launch of the Kiiraay party.
