The armed group Jnim, linked to Al-Qaida, released a propaganda video showcasing the April 25 attack on the military camp and airport at Sévaré, near Mopti in central Mali.
This assault on Sévaré was part of a wave of coordinated strikes across several Malian towns, carried out by Jnim jihadists and the Tuareg separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).
According to analyst Bakary Sambe, director of the Timbuktu Institute, the video demonstrates Jnim’s evolving strategic approach.
“Jnim showed its ability to penetrate urban areas, to enter hyper-strategic spaces like the airport and the Sévaré military camp, and to unsettle both the Malian army and its Russian allies,” Sambe said.
The coordinated attacks in April led to separatists retaking the town of Kidal and the killing of Malian Defence Minister Sadio Camara in Kati, near Bamako.
The Malian government reported 16 wounded from these operations.
“What Jnim has achieved is gradually placing Mali in a state that is neither war nor peace, and in that twilight, deploying an increasingly offensive strategy,” Bakary Sambe explained. He also highlighted the rise of figures like Bina Diarra, a Jnim spokesman, who help position the group “as a legitimate political actor.”
The release of this propaganda film comes as Malian authorities have offered rewards for information leading to the capture or location of Jnim leaders, underscoring the ongoing counterterrorism campaign against the group.
