In a powerful call for action, Manon Aubry, French Member of the European Parliament and leader of The Left group, has condemned the escalating crackdown on LGBTQ+ individuals in Senegal. The political figure is urging immediate intervention from France to protect those facing persecution under the country’s stringent anti-homosexuality laws.
Her strong statement comes amid rising concerns over the legal and social climate for LGBTQ+ communities in Senegal, where recent cases have drawn international attention. Aubry’s remarks highlight the urgent need for diplomatic pressure and humanitarian support to safeguard vulnerable groups.

France urged to act against Senegal’s homophobic laws
Manon Aubry has forcefully criticized Senegal’s legal framework, which now imposes severe penalties for same-sex relations. Under the revised legislation, individuals convicted of homosexuality face up to a decade behind bars, a move she describes as a blatant violation of human rights.
« No one should be persecuted for who they love, » Aubry declared in a widely shared statement. « The French government must stand firmly with the LGBTQ+ community in Senegal, both by pressuring local authorities and by offering asylum to those fleeing oppression. »
The French MEP also extended her solidarity to a French national currently detained in Senegal on related charges, calling for his immediate release. She emphasized that France has a moral obligation to intervene diplomatically and provide protection to those at risk.
