Chad’s Supreme Court in N’Djamena has upheld the 20-year prison sentence against former Prime Minister Succès Masra. The decision closes the door on further domestic appeals in the controversial Mandakao case.
Former Chadian Prime Minister and leader of the Transformers party, Succès Masra, now faces a final 20-year prison term after the Supreme Court rejected his legal team’s appeal. On May 21, the court confirmed the lower tribunal’s ruling, exhausting all national judicial avenues.
The August conviction stemmed from charges including ‘dissemination of racist and xenophobic messages,’ ‘criminal association,’ and ‘complicity in murder.’ Prosecutors pointed specifically to a 2023 social media post they claim incited intercommunal violence in Mandakao, which flared up again in May 2025.
Security around the Supreme Court building was notably tight during the hearing, with police and military personnel restricting access despite the session’s public nature.
With this ruling, Masra’s domestic legal options are exhausted. Any remaining recourse may now lie with regional or international courts. Supporters argue the case was politically motivated. ‘We hope a political solution can be found,’ stated Claudia Hoinathy, a party official.
