Chad security minister urges unity against community clashes
Chad’s Minister of Public Security calls for collective action to curb intercommunal violence, emphasizing a multi-faceted strategy and the involvement of all societal actors in restoring stability.
During a plenary session of the Senate, led by President Dr. Haroun Kabadi, lawmakers examined pressing security challenges facing Chad on June 1, 2026. The focus was on rising intercommunal violence and the government’s efforts to restore peace and social cohesion nationwide.
Responding to senators’ concerns about escalating clashes and internal security threats, General Ali Ahmat Aghabache, Minister of Public Security and Immigration, outlined government actions to address these issues. The exchange highlighted critical needs, including stronger state presence in vulnerable regions, enhanced conflict prevention mechanisms, and improved operational capacity for defense and security forces.
The minister presented stark figures: between 2024 and 2025, intercommunal violence resulted in 318 deaths and 3,015 injuries, along with severe property damage across multiple communities. These losses, he noted, continue to strain social cohesion and hinder national development efforts.
To counter this threat, the government has launched a comprehensive plan. Key measures include increased patrols in high-risk areas, expanded mobility for security forces with new motorcycles, and the recruitment of 1,000 police officers and 1,000 gendarmes to strengthen national security infrastructure.
General Aghabache stressed that security alone cannot resolve intercommunal tensions. He called for a holistic approach integrating community dialogue, local mediation, and public awareness campaigns. Success, he argued, requires collaboration among government bodies, traditional leaders, religious figures, and civil society. The session underscored Chad’s ongoing security challenges and the shared commitment of state institutions to safeguard peace, national unity, and citizen safety across the country.
