Chad secures key urbanization deals at Baku’s World Urban Forum

The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Development, and Housing presented on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the outcomes of Chad’s delegation visit to Baku, Azerbaijan, for the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13). The briefing, held at the ministry’s headquarters, gathered officials who participated in the mission, including the first deputy mayor of N’Djamena, representatives from the National Housing and Urban Development Company (SOPROFIM), and UN-Habitat staff.

Strategic discussions on sustainable urban growth

The Chadian delegation focused on critical urban challenges, including affordable housing, eco-friendly city planning, and climate-resilient infrastructure. By engaging in high-level dialogues, the country strengthened its position in African urban policy debates and showcased its national urbanization initiatives through a dedicated exhibition stand.

Major breakthroughs and future commitments

One of the most significant outcomes is the upcoming official visit by the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, scheduled from September 9 to 11, 2026. This visit will assess Chad’s urban landscape and review several government-submitted projects aimed at improving city resilience.

Additionally, Chad has been selected as one of the top ten eligible recipients for the UN Green Climate Fund, thanks to a successful joint proposal with Kenya. This milestone could unlock substantial funding for urban resilience projects, particularly flood mitigation efforts in vulnerable areas.

New partnerships to drive urban development

During the forum, Chad initiated discussions with Kenya and Morocco to establish collaborative frameworks in social housing, slum upgrading, and sustainable city planning. These talks could lead to joint missions, knowledge exchanges, and long-term cooperation agreements.

The Minister emphasized that these developments mark a turning point for Chad, offering tangible pathways to convert international partnerships into impactful urban projects that benefit communities nationwide. The country’s active participation at WUF13 underscores its commitment to inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient urban development, aligning with the vision set by the President of the Republic.
