Chad’s government refutes UN claims of civilian deaths in Lake Chad strikes
The Chadian government has strongly rejected accusations from the United Nations Human Rights Office regarding civilian casualties in military operations conducted in the Lake Chad Basin against Boko Haram positions. Speaking to the press in N’Djamena, the Minister of Communication and Government Spokesperson, Gassim Chérif Mahamat, dismissed the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.
Government dismisses UN allegations as attempts to undermine national security
The spokesperson condemned the accusations, labeling them as “calculated attempts to tarnish the reputation of the Chadian army.” He emphasized that such claims undermine the credibility and dignity of national defense forces, which remain fully committed to combating terrorism in the Sahel and the broader Lake Chad Basin. This region has been plagued by persistent armed group attacks for years, requiring a robust security response.
Chad defends military operations amid UN report controversy
According to the government, military operations are conducted with strict adherence to international humanitarian law and with every precaution taken to minimize collateral damage and protect civilians. Authorities argue that the UN report, which suggests significant civilian losses from aerial strikes, lacks sufficient evidence to support its conclusions.
N’Djamena has firmly contested the findings, asserting that the Chadian armed forces continue to play a pivotal role in stabilizing the region. The government calls for a “balanced and responsible assessment” of the security situation, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding civilian lives while coordinating with international partners to counter extremist threats in the area.
Diplomatic tensions escalate over Lake Chad security operations
The dispute over the UN report has intensified debates about the conduct of military operations in conflict zones. While Chad maintains its operations are precise and necessary, critics argue that civilian protection must remain a top priority. The government has urged for enhanced international cooperation to strengthen counter-terrorism efforts in the Lake Chad Basin, emphasizing the need for collective action against armed groups.
In this high-stakes environment, Chadian authorities reaffirm their determination to persist in their fight against Boko Haram, defending the legitimacy and professionalism of their forces amid a complex and evolving security landscape.
