Chad court grants temporary release to ex-GCAP leaders over health concerns

Two prominent figures from the former Group of Political Actors’ Consultation (GCAP), Me Bidi Valentin and Bombay Kelo, have been granted provisional release from prison due to deteriorating health conditions. Each had previously been sentenced to eight years in prison.

According to Me Adoum Moussa, a member of the defense team representing the ex-GCAP members, the decision comes as a response to the serious health challenges faced by both individuals.

« The provisional release was granted because of their advanced age and multiple health complications. The N’Djamena prosecutor’s office issued the order based on these medical grounds, » he explained.

However, the lawyer emphasized that this measure does not constitute a final acquittal.

Health-based concessions extend to other detainees

The defense team has initiated similar procedures for other imprisoned ex-GCAP members suffering from health issues. Efforts are underway to secure provisional releases for those whose conditions are deemed critical.

« Requests have been submitted for other detainees with serious illnesses, aiming for their temporary release on health grounds, » Me Adoum Moussa noted.

Legal recourse continues

Despite the provisional release, the defense has decided to challenge the initial verdict. An appeal has been filed against the eight-year prison sentences handed down to the ex-GCAP leadership.

« We have appealed the decision, and we now await the review of the case by the N’Djamena Court of Appeal, » the lawyer stated.

A previous ruling on May 8 had condemned the ex-GCAP leaders on charges including rebellion, criminal association, and illegal possession of firearms.
